http://nichol.deviantart.com/Asain horror , is the asain contributions to horror fiction in popular culture, noted for their unique thematic and conventional treatment of the horror genre in light of western treatments. Japanese horror tends to focus on psychological horror and tension building (anticipation), particularly involving ghosts and poltergeists, while many contain themes of folk religion such as: possession, exorcism, shamanism, precognition, and yōkai.(yōkai are a class of preternatural creatures in Japanese folklore ranging from the evil oni (ogre) to the mischievous kitsune (fox) or snow woman Yuki-onna. Some possess part animal and part human features)
My top 10 favorites:
1. Song at Midnight
The 'Song at Midnight' is a Chinese horror film released in 1937. Based on 'The Phantom of the Opera', of 1910, this film is counted amongst best 100 movies of China. A young Chinese opera singer is the central character of this film.
2. Veerana (Lonely Place)
It is one of the scariest Indian horror movies made in the year 1988 by Ramsay bros. Story of the film revolves around a witch who lives in a 'veerana' (lonely stretch). Specialty of this film is the Bava-like sets used to create the horror scenes.
3. The Eye
It is a 2002 Hong Kong-Singaporean-Thai film directed by Pang bros. A blind violinist who regains vision after a corneal transplant and starts seeing horrifying things which others are unable to, is the theme of this film. The struggles with adjusting to this new found vision is the core of this film. The violinist's confusion about whether these horrifying scenes are real or just illusions is one of the highlights of 'The Eye'. The film portrays extremes to which a human mind can travel and the atrocities it can inflict on others.
4. Purana Mandir (Old Temple)
This is an Indian horror film produced by Ramsay bros. in the year 1984. Samri, the monster-demon is the main character of this film. The monster captures a princess and tries to convert her into an evil force, however, is interrupted by the king (father of the princess) and decapitated. The decapitated head is kept at the king's mansion. The evil force, Samri, rises after 200 years and successors of the king have to fight and destroy the monster completely. The film became an instant hit in India and the monster-demon, Samri was used as a central character of many films made in the future.
5. A Tale of Two Sisters
As the name suggests, this film is about two teenage sisters who live in a haunted house with their step-mother. This South Korean film released in 2003 was critically acclaimed and its success was visible at the box-office too; it is the highest grossing Korean horror film ever.
6. Audition
This Japanese horror film released in 1999 and directed by Takashi Miike is known for the disturbing and grisly torture sequences. Such was the impact of the horror scenes of 'Audition' that many of the viewers had to be hospitalized out of terrible shock. Even the famous horror film directors Rob Zombie and John Landis found it difficult to watch the film.
7. The Echo
This Filipino horror movie was released in 2004 and directed by Yam Laranas. It is a typical 'haunted house' movie that makes best use of the thematic cues to create frightful sequences. The camera work is fabulous and rightly balanced with the lighting.
8. Ringu
The 'Ringu' is a Japanese horror movie, released in 1998 and directed by Hideo Nakata. It is considered as one of the best horror films of today's times. The film is based on a simple theme which but executed effectively. A mysterious videotape which after being watched, leads to the death of the viewer in one week is the simple plot. Unveiling the horror that lays beneath the most ordinary and insignificant things is the specialty of this film.
9. Ugetsu
This Japanese film was directed by Kenji Mizoguchi and released in the year 1953. Unlike the typical horror movies, it doesn't have scary/terrifying scenes in a true sense. The ways in which men (in general) inflict horrors on women are portrayed in this film.
10. Shutter
The 'Shutter' is a Thai horror movie released in the year 2004. A female spirit looking for a vengeance is the central character of this movie. Smart use of sound and visual effects is the specialty of this horror movie. The spooky concepts like appearance of ghosts in photographs is very well presented by the director.
